Bob Milligan, Esq.

Mr. Milligan brings to his mediation practice more than thirty years of experience as an attorney; subject matter expertise in a broad range of areas; excellent training; and, an aptitude for and interest in creative approaches to problem solving.  Having spent nearly twenty years of his professional life as a trial lawyer, he experienced first hand how litigation consumes clients and their resources.  As a result of that experience, he transitioned to a transactional and regulatory practice, where he applied knowledge, skills and creativity to find solutions to clients’ business needs, and to anticipate and resolve problems before they led to conflict.  He now employs those same skills and interests to the resolution of disputes through mediation.

While this route was somewhat circuitous, each step on the path provided valuable experience.  As a trial lawyer, he gained expertise in many areas, including personal injury, professional liability, insurance, securities fraud litigation and a wide variety of commercial disputes.  He also gained an intimate understanding of the practical realities of the jury system.  While he enjoyed success in jury trials, he recognizes, as Judge Posner wrote, that “Once a case gets to the jury, all bets are off.”

From his transactional and regulatory practice, Mr. Milligan learned how to negotiate and structure complex business relationships in the heavily regulated health care industry.  From this aspect of his practice he developed and further refined his deal-making and problem-solving skills.  In addition, he has gained a detailed understanding of the welter of regulations applicable the health care field, and he recently completed his L.L.M. degree in Biotechnology and Genomics.

Mr. Milligan’s combination experience, education and training, and enthusiasm for mediation make him uniquely suited to assist disputants in resolving disputes in the health care field, as well as other types of commercial and personal injury disputes.
